Dr. Phil Posey is a graduate of Florda State University, Eastman School of Music and received his Doctorate in Conducting and Music Education at the Conservatory of Music/University of Missouri-Kansas City. He has done post-doctoral studies in conducting at the Hochschule for Music in Vienna, Austria, and studied with numerous noted conducting teachers including Elizabeth Green, Leonard Slatkin and Arbo Arman. From 1965-2004 Posey served as Director of Instrumental Studies at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, where he conducted the Symphonic Band and Chamber Ensembles and taught Conducting, Music Education, Music History, Form and Analysis, Woodwinds and 20th Century Music. He has also taught and performed in England, Amman, Jordan and Xi'an, China. In 1969 he founded the Liberty Symphony Orchestra and served as Principal Condcutor and Music Director until 2004. Dr. Posey also founded the Metropolitian Youth Symphony of Kansas City and began the Liberty Symphony Chamber Orchestra. As a result of a sabbatical leave in 1993, he became the conductor of the Shaanxi Symphony Orchestra in Xi'an China, one of China's four professional, western-style orchestras. He has been invited back seven times to conduct the orchestra in concerts, summer series and tours. He has also served as rehearsal condcutor for the Kansas City Youth Symphony and has been guest conductor for numerous other community orchestras and bands.
As a professional bassoonist, Posey has performed with the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Frederick Fennel, Clyde Roller and Donald Hunsberger, and with the Eastman Philharmonia under Howard Hanson. He also played two seasons with the American Wind Symphony with Robert Austin Bodreau. Other recent performances include numerous community orchestras and churches.
Presently, Dr. Posey is Artist in Residence and Conductor of the Kansas City Wind Symphony at the Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, Kansas. This active group of professional musicians, music educators and community members presents six concerts a year and will take a concert tour to China in June of 2007. www.kcwindsymphony.org
Dr. Posey and his wife, Ann, reside in Liberty, Missouri. They have three grown children and three delightful grandchildren
